Reviews
Card backs show in dark sepia brown with the seven pointed faery star and a simple yet delicate border. The artwork is consistently executed by Selena Fenech, with many magical scenes that could—in one card image—launch a complete fantasy narrative or book; such as Card 5, the “Secret Doorway”. The faeries, both female and male, are shown variously human like, the occasional pointed elvin ears, and as more organic and earthy characters, such as gnomes and the Green Man.
The text is a respectable size and font, and no wee book, at 187 pages and measuring 5 7/8 x 8 ¥ x ½ inches. There are 19 entries in the table of contents, in addition to the card interpretations; so the author more than adequately covers topics of concern, including addressing reversals, dark faeries, faery symbols and much more. Each card is summarized with key words, the image is reproduced in miniature and black print, and divinatory meanings are given along with reversals. True believers in the faery realm will find a home in this oracle, and those who may not have had direct contact will likely open the door to both inner and outer contact with our ethereal companions.
I have had a few encounters with the faery folk, yet I never tire of hearing about the experiences of others, whether child or adult. Lucy Cavendish is clearly familiar with not only faery lore but shows, in the information in the book and cards, her experience in finding the faery folk to be teachers and helpers. The Faery Oracle is thus her offering of a fruitful path for we mortals that is both accessible, and walks in lockstep with the great nurturer and wise one that is Mother Earth. In this oracle, one will find rich colors, metaphoric imagery and plentiful opportunities to let the good folk share wisdom and humor.
